Danish Church Art

The Life of Jesus to Age 12

James Mills

PART 5 THE MINISTRY OF JESUS The period of Jesus' life between His baptism by John, and His Entry into Jerusalem, appears to be a minor topic in the Danish medieval wall paintings. Because the number of paintings is relatively scanty, I have chosen to show complete set when they appear in a church. In some cases this results in poor depiction's. For example in Helsingoer Carmelite Closter, the paintings were done on masonry walls. This results in the imposition of the pattern of the bricks and the plaster joints on the painting. However, the purpose in this effort is to call attention to vast amount of medieval art in Denmark, and the bad must be shown as well as the good. JESUS AND THE SAMARITAN WOMAN Ejsing. The wall paintings in the refrectory of the Carmelite Closter were painted on a masonry surface, not on plaster. The result can be seen in the mural, some horizontal lines are very distinct, and some of the vertical joints also show. These lines break up the drawing of the figures, and I find that confusing.
