Biographie

Fin du XII^e siècle

Philippe devient prieur des chanoines augustins au prieuré Sainte-Frideswide d'Oxford après la mort de Robert de Cricklade entre 1174 et 1179. Son mandat se termine entre 1191 et 1195. Il écrit les Miracles de Sainte-Frideswide (Miracula sancte Frideswide) seulement quelques années après la traduction de Frideswide le 12 février 1180.

Les Miracles de Philippe submergent le lecteur de preuves de l'efficacité des pèlerinages à la sainte. Ils décrivent plus d'une centaine de miracles qui ont eu lieu de son temps. Philippe ouvre le livre avec un prologue où il élabore sur le but des miracles, qu'il interprète comme des dons de Dieu pour renforcer la foi. Les miracles eux-mêmes sont moins fleuris; ils s'efforcent de fournir des preuves avec les noms des bénéficiaires, les lieux d'où ils sont venus et les événements miraculeux. Le seul manuscrit du texte complet, lequel comporte des révisions du texte par l'auteur lui-même, atteste de son utilisation dans le cadre de la pratique religieuse au prieuré.
