Danish Church Art

The Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Annunciation

The Annunciation is shown is a large number of images in medieval Danish art. This is the result of the popularity of this theme in the brass baptismal dishes from Southern Germany dated 1550-75. In personal conversation in Denmark, I was told that the Roman Catholic rite of baptism favored total immersion, while the Lutheran rite favored pouring the water on the head of the infant. Hence the sudden use of baptismal dishes over the top of the font. The greater number of these dishes had a diameter of 50-70 centimeters, a depth of about 2.5 cm, and a wide lip. The major motif covered the bottom of the dish, the rim contained other decoration. Most of the dishes with the Annunciation theme had a hunt scene on the rim, dogs chasing hart. This hunt scene might be connected iconographically with the Annunciation if it seen as the Hunt for Innocence.
