Probablement fils ou petit-fils de Humphrey de Bohun, Ve comte de Hereford († 1274), Rauf de Boun est chanoine de la Cathédrale de Saint-Paul de Londres au moins à partir de 1295 (voir Registrum Statutarum et Consuetudinum Ecclesie Cathedralis Sancti Pauli Londinensis, ed. by W. S. Simpson, London, Nichols and Sons, 1873, p. 94, document daté du 11 avril 1295), mais il n'est pas à exclure qu'il occupait déjà cette charge à partir de 1291 (voir Spence, p. 61). À la demande d'Henry de Lacy (1249-1311), comte de Lincoln et bienfaiteur de la Cathédrale de Saint-Paul, Rauf compose en anglo-normand le Petit Bruit, un abrégé de l'histoire d'Angleterre de Brut à la mort du roi Édouard Ier.
