Henry Yates Thompson

Henry Yates Thomspon (1838-1928) est un bibliophile anglais qui amassa l'une des plus intéressantes collections de manuscrits enluminés de son époque. Contrairement à Phillipps, le nombre de volumes dans sa collection demeure relativement modeste, préférant revendre et échanger des manuscrits de moindre qualité pour en acquérir de plus précieux. Une partie de sa collection lui vient de son grand-père maternel, Joseph Brooks Yates, duquel il hérite en 1855. Il accroît sa collection jusqu'à sa mort en acquérant des manuscrits des successions, entre autres, de Lord Ashburnham, Thomas Phillipps, Firmin Didot et John Ruskin.

En mai 1897, il acquiert la portion de la collection de Lord Ashburnham appelée "Appendix", dont il ne garde qu'environ un cinquième et revend le reste chez Sotheby's en 1899 et 1901.

Dans les dix dernières années de sa vie, il se départit progressivement de sa collection à travers des ventes aux enchères chez Sotheby's (1919, 1920 et 1921), des ventes privés ou des dons. En 1941, à la mort de sa femme, les manuscrits enluminés restants sont légués au British Museum (auj. la British Library) et sont conservés dans le fonds Yates Thompson.
